Notes:	Drawing upon the findings of the second national census of homeless school students conducted in 2002, this paper compares the incidence and prevalence of youth homelessness across Australian states and examines the extent to which states have engaged in early intervention and prevention strategies to reduce homelessness rates. The national census was undertaken as part of the Youth Homelessness 2001 research programme funded by State and Territory governments and the Salvation Army. The methodology of the comparative study and its key findings are presented and it is suggested that homelessness is not evenly spread across the states. The findings also indicate that school-based prevention and intervention is less likely to be effective where there is a higher number of homeless students or where other factors, such as family violence and alcohol abuse, necessitate a 'whole of community development' approach.
