Article takes an overview of human rights issues as they relate to domestic violence in particular and women’s access to human rights in general. Argues that the promotion of UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women have allowed domestic violence to be moved from the private realm to public view and be recognised as a mockery of human rights. Discusses how international socialisation may be used to protect women’s rights and what role human rights organisations and trans-national NGOs can play in influencing governments to alter the endemic nature of violence against women in their society.
