Notes:	Outlines the methodology and results of a UK study conducted to measure the prevalence of domestic violence amongst women attending a general practice, to establish any associations between demographic factors and risk of violence, and to ascertain the extent and acceptability to women of routine screening by medical and nursing staff. The results indicate that over a third of women experience domestic violence and that many of these women are not identified by health practitioners. A substantial minority objected to routine questioning although the high rate of violence against women pregnant in the previous year suggests the need for selective screening in antenatal clinics. Argues the introduction of routine screening without sufficient evidence to support its effectiveness would be premature and that awareness of domestic violence is of greater priority in the health care setting.
