The above statement from the National Plan (2011) is a powerful representation of gender as central to the policy framework for reducing and preventing violence against women. This National Plan clearly names men's violence against women in their homes as deleterious to the entire community and requiring comprehensive, consistent and coordinated intervention and prevention. Even though Australia has special features, it follows the international arena in gendering violence against women and thereby considering the particular individual, social, community, criminal and policy responses that are necessary. Understanding how a society responds, or fails to respond, to different types of violence is a vital component of any policy that aims to reduce violence in an effective manner. This brief paper highlights the importance of a National Plan to the everyday advocacy worker within the domestic violence sector.en
