Notes:	Speech given at 'Our Children Our Future... Domestic Violence and its Consequences' a Symposium held at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne, 15 May 2002 Discusses the importance of early intervention with disadvantaged families where infants could be neglected or unable to access the relevant services. The author refers to the Strengthening Families Program currently implemented in Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital as an example of interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral (welfare and health) collaboration that addresses the issue. Community agencies, hospital staff and the families refer the clients or themselves to the programme, and social workers develop an appropriate intervention plan. This project links the families to community-based family support agencies and promotes further specialised assistance within the hospital. The case of a family victim of domestic violence who accessed the programme is presented to emphasise its success.
