Outlines the methodology and findings of a US study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of a nursing intervention programme for increasing abused women’s safety-promoting behaviours. Some of the theoretical and conceptual models used to explain and predict patterns of violence are discussed and an analysis of methodologies used to evaluate the programme is conducted. The findings suggest that intervention models must look beyond documentation and assessment towards more long-term strategies that ensure ongoing protection of women’s health and safety.en
