dc.description.notes | The gap between practice and research has been an ongoing issue in the mental health field. The authors of this article review some of the contextual material in the field, looking at divergences between practice and research, and point to a need for more collaborative work. They give an excellent example of this looking at a meeting between practitioners and researchers in the state of Maryland, USA, which aimed at informing the research on the Abuser Intervention Programs (AIPs). These roundtable discussions explored a number of issues, such as tailoring and matching interventions to individuals, understanding motivations and processes for change and the relationship of the mental health field to the criminal justice system and to community and social institutions. There is an excellent summary of the implications of collaboration between practice and research (p.1322), which in many ways tries to synchronise the top-down aspect of policy making and the practitioners’ bottom-up approach. The authors suggest that joint meetings such as this one are a good basis for a more integrated relationship between science and practice in AIPs. | en |
