Follows on from an earlier study conducted by the authors and explores how US physicians, with experience in domestic violence issues, approach intervention with patients in the health care setting. A series of focus groups indicated establishing a trusting relationship with the patient, through listening, validating experiences and challenging denial, was often a first step. The most common forms of intervention included documenting the abuse, referring to appropriate services and planning safety procedures. These modes were supported by patient feedback. The importance of coordination and collaboration with other staff and agencies was also emphasised.en
