Notes:  Overview: This article reports on a United States study that used the Conflict Tactics Scale and Parent Child Conflict Tactics Scale to determine the prevalence of child maltreatment and neglect in homes, with and without domestic violence.

Methods: Cross sectional analysis was carried out with survey data of 1,232 mothers with partners. Participants were randomly selected and interviews were anonymous and carried out by telephone.

Results: The relationship between intimate partner violence and harsh psychological punishment was the strongest and most consistent, while the relationship between intimate partner violence and harsh physical punishment was not clear and consistent, in contrast to previous studies. The authors hypothesise that this may be due to limitations imposed by the method and sampling used.

Conclusions: The paper discusses implications for practice and policy arising from the finding that all forms of child abuse or maltreatment are associated with intimate partner violence or domestic violence.
