Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at examining the epidemiology of intimate partner violence amongst older, functionally independent women, with specific emphasis on its health effects. A review of current literature on victim and perpetrator factors associated with elder abuse is also provided. Concludes that although further research is needed in this area, the results suggest exposure to abuse has a highly detrimental impact on older women’s mental and physical health.en
