This article reviews the research findings from 1993 to 2003 with regard to the relationship of intimate partner violence (IPV), women’s physical health and use of health services. It cautions that studies used different definitions of IPV and that a common definition is not in use. An overview is given on the relationship of IPV and effects of physical health, including direct effects (mortality, injury), the long term direct effects (traumatic brain injury, strangulation, disability, chronic pain, pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes) as well as indirect effects (general physical health, sexual and reproductive health, health behaviour). It discusses the limitations and gaps in the current body of research such as lack of longitudinal studies, with most studies grouped into a few specialties with almost no research in the areas of allied health, dentistry, or management. With some exceptions, there is also little progress in moving the health care system to routinely screen women for IPV. Recommendations for future research, practice and policy directions are provided.en
