| dc.description.notes | This article explores the characteristics of intimate partner violence cases that influence the interface of the victims with the court system in the US, by way of a literature and research review. A review is provided on the research on criminal justice interventions and on the effectiveness of civil protective orders. Police responses to violence against women, including arrest patterns in cases of intimate partner violence, and effectiveness of arrest are discussed. Issues regarding prosecution and court response to domestic violence and rape (prosecution patterns, effectiveness of prosecution patterns, court processing and sentencing) are summarised. Research on the effectiveness of civil protective orders is outlined. It concludes that arrest and civil protective orders are associated with reduced experience with subsequent violence.
