Notes:  General Overview: Following interviews conducted with 370 older women in Washington and Idaho in the United States (US), this article presents findings on the prevalence, types, duration, frequency and severity of partner violence experienced by older women.

Methods: This paper reports on a randomly selected sample of 370 English-speaking women, 65 years of age or older from Washington State and Idaho, who participated in a cross-sectional telephone interview. Researchers used questions from the Behavioral Risk factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) and the Women’s Experience with Battering (WEB) Scale to measure a woman’s exposure to partner violence.

Findings: Among the study’s findings were a lifetime partner violence prevalence of more than 26% and abuse rated as severe, which ranged from 39% to 70% according to type of abuse. Significantly, the researchers found a very low percentage of women had ever been asked by a health practitioner about their experience of physical or sexual violence – which suggests that improvements in screening and response would be valuable. The authors suggest that this research may be used as a starting place for IPV prevention planning in older women.
