Notes:	This article looks at the intersection of intimate partner violence (IPV), substance use and HIV status among a sample of low income urban women (N = 611) in a US study. Rates of IPV did not vary between HIV-negative and HIV-positive women but there were highly significant differing rates of substance use. The relationship between IPV and drug use appeared stronger for HIV-negative women. The cross-sectional designs of most IPV studies and the limitations of self-report are two of the main barriers to understanding the temporal relationship between drug use and IPV. A literature review is provided with regard to the nature of temporal relationships between IPV and substance abuse. Results of this study support the recommendations that women who have been victimised should receive treatment for symptoms of trauma and substance use in order to break the assault-substance use cycle. Studies need to connect the disparate fields of substance use and partner violence. It suggests the need to assess risk for IPV in drug treatment programmes.
