Considers the question of what doctors presented with suspected or likely cases of intimate partner violence should do with respect to offering referrals and/or appropriate intervention, and debates the utility of universal screening as a way of addressing this question. A series of secondary and tertiary interventions that might form part of a practitioner's referral is suggested and the need for further research into and evaluation of existing programmes is highlighted. Studies from the US, UK and Australia are quoted.en
