Outlines the methodology and results of a study aimed at testing and extending the findings of a previous study, conducted by Johnson (1999), in which it was proposed that intimate terrorism and common couple violence constitute distinct subgroups of physical aggression in violent relationships. Some discrepancies between the findings of feminist researchers and other family violence researchers are highlighted and it is suggested that Johnson's study, together with the present study, go some way to reconciling these differences. The research findings support Johnson's proposition that qualitatively different kinds of physically violent relationships develop but further research into the nature of these subgroups is advocated.en
