A comprehensive review of the literature on violence in dating relationships. The first part identifies a range of methodological issues including definitional problems; issues of measurement - particularly the use of the Conflict Tactics Scale which has been subject to extensive critique because of its failure to address issues of meaning, consequences, motivation and intention; violence rates; and sampling (the majority of studies use white, middle class college or university students). A major problem identified in the literature is its narrowness of scope because of a preoccupation with physical violence. The review then addresses the issue of gender and violence before exploring the evidence in support of social learning theory (including learning from both family of origin and peers) and feminist theory. It concludes with a number of suggestions for future research including the use of multiple methodologies (qualitative and quantitative); the inclusion of types of violence other then physical; and more careful analysis of gender and violence to identify the difference between men’s and women’s use of violence.en
