Examines some of the major theoretical and empirical contributions to the debate surrounding the question of whether or not the law is an appropriate and effective mechanism for tackling the issue of violence against women. Presents five positions - feminist realists, arrest studies, abstentionists, sceptical reformists and community justice advocates - and highlights the failure of each of these to effectively combine evidence-based theory with theory-based evidence. Concludes that there is a need for an alternative approach which integrates rehabilitative strategies into criminal justice responses and recognises both the outcome and the process of legal intervention from the perspectives of those who are most affected.en
