Journal of the DVRC Inc.<br/ >Defines the term ‘elder abuse’ and identifies most abusers as family members, the majority being male. While other forms of family violence have been documented, Australia has only recently begun to acknowledge the problem of elder abuse. Ageism is one factor which makes it easier for elder abuse to occur and difficult to detect. Problems associated with escaping this form of abuse include the lack of appropriate crisis accommodation or alternative long term housing; reluctance to leave home which has become a part of the older person’s identity; and the fear of being institutionalised or unable to cope on one’s own.en
