Notes:	Summarises a comprehensive submission developed by the Domestic Violence and Incest Resource Centre (DVIRC) and Centre Against Sexual Assault (CASA) to the Victorian Attorney General which calls for a review of the criminal justice response to domestic violence, including the implementation and practices pertaining to the Crimes (Family Violence) Act (1987). Discusses problems with the legal response to domestic violence and outlines several contributing factors including inadequate police response and attitude towards domestic violence victims, lack of enforcement of intervention orders by police, the low rate of criminal charges brought against offenders, problems in the implementation of the family violence liaison officer positions, alienation of victims and trivialisation of their cases by magistrates and legal procedures. Reports that as consequence of these problems many women who have sought help are unlikely to seek further assistance from the legal system in the future. Argues that monitoring and evaluation mechanisms must be established for the Act and the legal processes that are connected to it. Suggests that there is a clear need for a research project which addresses these issues and outlines several points that this research must consider.
