Article discusses links between domestic violence, child abuse and abuse of family pets, using studies from Melbourne, the UK and the USA to illustrate. Research shows that cruelty to companion animals is used to enforce the silence of the victim or to punish or coerce the victim. It also demonstrates that women remain in violent domestic situations out of concern at leaving their pets behind. Relationship is shown between children who abuse animals and abusive behaviours in adulthood and also between child victims of abuse and children who abuse animals. Example of a multi-agency response to child and animal abuse from California, USA is given, and it is suggested that a similar co-operative framework be adopted in Australia.
