Outlines the methodology and results of an Australian research project aimed at exploring the role of child maltreatment, abuse, neglect and family violence in participants’ current and subsequent adaptive functioning. Three separate studies were undertaken, with a view to identifying the relationship between child maltreatment, family environment, adjustment in childhood, adjustment in adulthood and current adaptive functioning. The findings indicate that different types of child maltreatment will frequently overlap and that the short- and long-term consequences of these multiple forms of abuse will vary considerably, often depending on the presence of protective factors in a victim’s environment. Limitations of the study and recommendations for future research are also made.en
