Based on previous research and theoretical analysis of the behavioural and personality characteristics of intimately and non-intimately violent men, this article presents the aims, methodology and findings of a US study aimed at comparing the profiles of the various groups of violent and intimately violent men. Factors considered in the comparison included severity of violence, exposure to family of origin violence and family-only violence. The results are to some extent consistent with the tripartite typology proposed by Holtzworth-Munroe and Stuart (1994) but contradict the model in a number of key areas. Limitations of the study and directions for future research are also addressed.en
