This paper examines domestic violence survivors’ experiences of services in relation to their mental health. The authors employ the narratives of emotional distress revealed in a broader research they conducted in 2000/2001 in the UK. Symptoms associated with depression, post-traumatic stress and self-harm were common consequences of the violence endured by the women interviewed. The experiences of the women who accessed the mental health sector raised concerns about a lack of recognition of trauma, maintaining the invisibility of the abuser, victim blaming and use of medication. The interventions found helpful provided by Women’s Aid outreach and other community-based services included lifting the blame, helping women name domestic violence, pro-active screening and safety planning. The need for specialist services, as well as practice and intervention focused on survivor’s experiences, is also discussed.en
