Argues that the financial, emotional and social dependence of many migrant women on their partners/sponsors places them in a position of particular vulnerability to violence and that legislative provisions set up to protect these women are not being utilised. Suggests that even when these mechanisms are utilised they are problematic. Outlines some of the reasons why other means of legal protection, such as Apprehended Violence Orders, are also often inaccessible to migrant women. Highlights several other barriers faced by all women in abusive relationships, including accommodation and income support, arguing such barriers are particularly relevant for migrant women and advocates for more efficient and equitable administration of income support for migrant women in domestic violence situations.
