dc.description.notes | Reports and discusses the methodology and findings of a US study aimed at identifying patterns of battered women’s satisfaction with various aspects of the criminal legal system, including police response, prosecutors’ handling of the case, the court system and the court outcome, and exploring some of the factors about survivors’ situation and the criminal legal system, which may have influenced participant satisfaction. Major patterns identified included the relationship between women’s perceived control over the criminal legal system and their satisfaction with it, the lack of satisfaction amongst women whose abusive partners were drug/alcohol abusers, the absence of race difference in satisfaction levels and a positive correlation between severity of abuse and victim satisfaction. It is argued that, although the majority of women are dissatisfied with at least one aspect of the criminal legal system, the complexity of their experiences within it is not easily delineated and the impact of other systems must also be considered. | en |
