Notes:	Reviews the literature and finds mixed support for assumptions that battering decreases a women’s parenting capacity. Interviewed 95 women in the US and collected qualitative data about their perceptions of the effects of violence on their parenting. 23 women said that violence had no effect on their parenting; 24 described negative effects; while 19 described positive effects, for example increased empathy and caring towards their children. The interviews revealed that some women were actively working to protect their children from the potential effects of violence. They also found that many women who have experienced violence report issues which are more similar to, than different from, other parents’ concerns about parenting. The authors caution against pathologizing women because they are in a violent relationship and suggest that it would be more helpful to intervene in ways which support women in the actions they are already taking to assist their children, rather than to presume ignorance or incompetence because the women are abused.
