Notes: | Discusses the findings and methodology of a research study aimed at exploring the association between ‘multi-type maltreatment’ or the experience of more than one form of child maltreatment, childhood family characteristics and adjustment problems in adulthood. A definition of ‘multi-type maltreatment’ is proposed and research into identified risk factors, its incidence, prevalence and consequences is reviewed. Findings reveal a high degree of overlap between maltreatment types experienced, between maltreatment and witnessing family violence and between levels of multi-type maltreatment, trauma symptomatology and self-depreciation in later life. Concludes by providing suggestions for future research, intervention and prevention. |
