Aust.), to form: International journal of narrative therapy and community work This narrative is the author's personal reflection of two articles: 'Naming abuse and breaking from its effects: An interview with Michael White' and 'Working with contradictions' by Johnella Bird. The paper is part of the work performed by students of Dulwich Centre Advanced Certificate in Narrative Therapy for interstate practitioners. The author's concern about re-experiencing the physical and emotional abuse while counselling is explored. She found the place for emotion in therapy in Michael White's responses. Instead of re-living the trauma of abuse, the person looks back at the ways in which s/he survived this abuse and what made this possible. The importance of respecting conflicting positions that people hold, as addressed in Johnella's work, is also discussed.
