dc.description.notes | Discusses the methodology and results of a US study aimed at identifying risk factors associated with employers' legal liability for workplace violence. Cases investigated by the Lincoln Police Department, Nebraska, were analysed with reference to the role of non-employees and co-workers, and domestic violence in contributing to non-fatal violence in the workplace. Results of the study indicate that, despite recent media hype surrounding the incidence of internal workplace violence, violence between employees accounts for only a third of all workplace violence, the majority being generated by external sources. Moreover, a large proportion of internal cases arose as a result of domestic disputes -- for example, a former partner threatening a female employee. The study thus highlights the tendency for domestic violence to infiltrate the workplace and the implications this has for management, training and policy development in the private sphere. | en |
