Notes:  Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at identifying some of the factors which may be predictive of domestic violence victims’ cooperation with prosecuting authorities and police, including interpersonal and institutional support systems, victim mental health, severity of violence, substance abuse and parental status. A background to the various elements of the legal system which can create stress for victims choosing to prosecute is provided and it is argued that tangible support networks during this time are key to continued cooperation. In relation to other variables, severity of violence and parental status were found to be significantly related to levels of cooperation, but mental health issues were not. Substance abuse significantly predicted victims’ non-cooperation with prosecution. Limitations of the study and directions for further research and intervention are also suggested.
