This article presents the findings of a research project published in 1997 entitled ’Police Responses to Crimes Against Women (Family Violence and Sexual Assault)’. The research is referred to as the Police Report in this article. The research was undertaken with the initial aim of investigating whether women in rural communities were disadvantaged by the lack of female police members in rural stations. The findings indicated that they are disadvantaged -- but it seems that this disadvantage comes mainly from the impact of police culture and lack of awareness and sensitivity about the causes and implications of violence against women that exists within the police force. This article also discusses the responses by police to the publication of the research findings and the efforts undertaken by the Rural Women’s Legal Outreach Program (RWLOP) and others to address some of the structural inequalities identified in the research.en
