The ‘Special Benefit Activity Test’ was introduced for certain holders of temporary protection, humanitarian or safe haven visas on 1 January 2003. Special Benefit Activity Test refugees are required, among other conditions, to actively seek and undertake suitable paid work; and apply for a stipulated number of jobs in a determined period. Language and Literacy programmes and Vocational training might be provided for some refugees. Exemptions from the Activity Test include temporary incapacitation, major personal crisis and English classes. Penalties incur if the Special Benefit Activity Test is contravened.en
