dc.description.notes | Review of group work manual that provides session plans and resources to deliver a ten-week programme for 8 to 12-year-old children and their mothers who have experienced family violence. Designed to create a therapeutic environment where children can express their feelings in a peer-group situation, programme also seeks to open up communication between mother and child to allow emotional healing and to assist children to find ways to manage feelings like depression and anger. It is stressed that programme is demanding of both time and emotional energy and requires skilled facilitators to provide the necessary level of supervision. Although developed with a focus on mothers as the primary caregivers, the manual also includes details of a pilot programme for fathers and children. | en |
