Outlines a model for ensuring the safety of battered women participating in qualitative research. The safety protocol proposed raises issues relating to contacting participants, confidentiality, anonymity, protection of data, location of and conduct during interviews and accurately assessing risks posed to participants. The responsibilities of the researcher with regard to reporting disclosed abuse are also explored, particularly in relation to child abuse and mandatory reporting laws. Argues that to be accountable in research with battered women, safety of participants must be prioritised and the research design thoroughly planned.en
