This article summarises the findings from a US study which examined university student perceptions of intimate partner violence in lesbian relationships. A total of 287 men and women, mostly heterosexual, participants read a police report and viewed images, before completing a survey about their perceptions of blame, plausibility of the claim and level of danger in the situation. Results indicated that the gender of the participants and the gendered appearance of the victim and offender affected the level of perceived blame and plausibility of the claim. The discussion examines how the findings may be explained by heterosexist stereotypes.en
