Drawing upon data obtained by the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS) conducted in 1998 in the US, this paper presents the methodology and results of a study aimed at estimating the prevalence of dating violence and analysing its relationship with other forms of interpersonal violence and the incidence of psycho-social dysfunction in victims. ‘Dating violence’ is defined as including stalking, forced sex, physical aggression and psychological abuse between non-cohabitating partners. The findings indicate that women are more likely than men to report victimisation in the dating context, that men and women experience different types of dating violence and that there are a number of factors associated with the likelihood of exposure to, perpetration and/or impact of such violence. A review of existing studies and literature in this area is included.en
