dc.description.notes | Discusses the methodology and results of a UK study aimed at exploring the relationship between parental conflict tactics, child maltreatment and the conflict styles adopted by young adults in conflict with parents. Building upon findings that children who are maltreated often begin to exhibit violent behaviour in the context it was first experienced, the study highlights the lack of research into parent abuse and the inability of current theories of family violent to adequately explain it. The results indicate that mothers are at a greater risk of parent abuse, but that fathers are more likely to suffer ‘severe’ levels of violence. It is concluded that, although different types of child maltreatment lead to different responses in children, and child maltreatment is not the only factor influencing violence towards parents, there is a clear relationship between physical maltreatment during childhood, the use of violent conflict tactics by parents and parent abuse. | en |
