Reports findings of a Melbourne study which aimed to determine the incidence of domestic violence, childhood abuse and sexual assault experienced by 3,026 women over 18 years of age attending general practitioners. Highlights that domestic violence has short- and long-term severe health effects, including physical injury, somatic complaints, anxiety, depression, pelvic pain, sexual and gynaecological problems. Victims also use health services more often than women who are not victims of domestic violence. Asserts that doctors are not skilled at recognising domestic violence and estimates that doctors diagnose one battered women in twenty-five. Concludes that detection by doctors is essential to minimising the short- and long-term effects of domestic violence on women.en
