This research brief examines the effectiveness of place-based initiatives in reducing disadvantage in Indigenous communities. Evaluations of the COAG Indigenous Trials, Meeting Challenges Making Choices (Cape York) and Communities in Crisis are examined, with a particular focus on the lessons that can be learned. the author discusses the factors for successful place-based programs, including a willingness from government to do things differently, for example devolution of decision-making, power sharing, and changes to accountability and funding.
