Describes the United Nations Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), a legally binding and formal recognition of the human rights of women all over the world, to which Australia is a signatory. However, in August 2000, the Australian government announced that it would not sign the Optional Protocol to CEDAW. Emphasises that the Optional Protocol will give women, in 62 nations around the world, a right of complaint and real remedies when basic human rights are violated and asserts that Australian women have therefore been denied access to an additional enforcement mechanism for their human rights protection.
