Study draws upon fieldwork undertaken in 1996/7 which looked at policing of domestic violence. Explores views of a sample of 65 women from three Thames Valley Police areas to determine what action they want/expect from police, while also looking at criminal interventions, how victims deal with violence and police policy/practice in domestic violence situations. Police intervention is heavily focused towards prosecution, which may not assist women who are still in fear of their partners. Outlines three major positions of police work- ‘victim choice’; ‘pro arrest’; and ‘victim empowerment’. Looks at the context of domestic violence and the impact it has on the choices women make, especially in relation to getting involved in the criminal justice system. Decisions can include calling the police and whether or not to prosecute. Discusses the role of Domestic Violence Units and Officers in the UK, and recommends a policy model that better meets the needs of victims who contact police.en
