| dc.description.notes | Challenges the perception of a coercive criminal justice system as a successful response to domestic violence issues. Both offenders and victims are heterogeneous groups whose specific circumstances are not necessarily addressed through arrest and prosecution. The author reviews the typologies of male domestic violence perpetrators to emphasise the need of appropriate policies. Criminal justice and therapeutic interventions do not distinguish between offender types, handling diverse levels of violence and risk with the same strategies. Research findings show that even though female victims contact the police, they do not always want their partners arrested and/or prosecuted. They might require help to manage the violence by calming or temporarily removing the offender. The police are also called to provide information and counselling.
