Special issue title 'Out of the fire: domestic violence and homelessness'<br/ >Also published as DVIRC Newsletter Autumn Edition, February 2001<br/ >Discusses some of the major problems with policing of domestic violence in rural communities, specifically in relation to the shire of Hastings, NSW, a relatively isolated, socially and economically disadvantaged area. Contends that entrenched assumptions and beliefs change slowly in rural areas and that the limited resources put towards domestic violence services and training in regional Australia is evidence of this. Highlights the double disadvantage faced by indigenous women in rural communities. Suggests several strategies which, coupled with attitudinal change, could improve outcomes for isolated victims of domestic violence, including increased use of telephone interim orders, better training and education in domestic violence matters for police and faster responses to Apprehended Violence Orders.en
