Outlines the methodology and results of a US study aimed at evaluating the role of forgiveness in influencing the decision by victims of domestic violence to return to their abusive partners. Other factors which may contribute to a decision to return, such as economic instability, fear of loneliness and social pressure, were also considered. Findings suggest that forgiveness can indeed be predictive of an intention to return to an abusive partner and it is argued that further research and education of staff in battered women’s shelters is needed to establish the safety risks this can pose for these women.en
