Presents the methodology and findings of a US study aimed at comparing psychosocial outcomes in women who had and women who had not experienced intimate partner violence within a 6-month period. Participants were pregnant women in their last trimester. The findings suggest that severity, continuity and recency of IPV influence psychosocial outcomes but it is noted that none of these factors adequately explain the psychosocial effects of violence in all cases. It is also acknowledged that women who had not experienced IPV in the last 6 months might still have a history of abuse and hence suffer negative psychosocial effects. Limitations of the study are highlighted and directions for future research are proposed.en
