This issue of Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health has a section on Violence and Health which contains 6 other relevant articles.<br/ >Reports on a study undertaken in 1996 in inner Brisbane on women attending 20 randomly-selected general practices, who were screened using a self-reported questionnaire for partner abuse. Results show that 37% of women in the sample admitted to having had an abusive adult intimate relationship: one in four had experienced physical abuse; one in three, emotional abuse; and one in ten, sexual abuse. Associations of abuse included being younger than 60, separated/divorced, having a history of child abuse or domestic violence between one’s parents. The authors recommend vigilance on the part of clinicians to possible indications of partner abuse (age, marital status, past history of abuse).en
