Canadian study of 146 girls aged 13-17 examines dating behaviour among victims of child sexual assault. Determines prevalence of psychological and physical violence and investigates influence of adolescent child sexual assault victims’ characteristics on dating violence. Also looks at reciprocity. Study looked at 2 blocks of variables, firstly 6 risk factors: age, family financial difficulties, witnessed domestic violence, physical abuse in childhood, number of dating partners and reciprocal aggression. Secondly added a block of 5 other variables: identity of perpetrator, number of episodes of abuse, duration of sexual abuse, physical violence during sexual abuse and intercourse during sexual abuse. Also tested interaction with witnessing domestic violence and physical abuse in childhood to assess potential cumulative effect of abuse. Prevalence of physical violence was 22% and psychological violence was 80% which was reciprocal 90% of the time. Found that child sexual abuse is clearly a predictor of dating violence. Another finding was that sexual abuse is more strongly associated with perpetrating violence than physical abuse is. This is one of the few studies that looks at a sample of maltreated youth rather than the general population and as such it is particularly revealing and usefulen
