This Australian article discusses crime prevention programmes directed at the Indigenous male population, including adults, youth and children. It finds that the characteristics that effective programmes have include: an holistic approach; the involvement of community members; a perspective of self-determination; and culturally appropriate content and staff. It mentions programmes developed through community-based organisations and court-mandated and court-referred programmes for offenders. Projects which focused on working with Indigenous adolescents to prevent family violence are also considered. It concludes that new approaches and models involve strengthening Indigenous family life and culture, and that the new programmes move beyond seeing Indigenous men just as perpetrators as they address the long-term effects of colonisation and marginalisation.en
