Outlines the methodology and results of a research study in the US aimed at assessing the spuriousness of the relationship between problem drinking and intimate partner violence, and exploring some of the mechanisms that may account for and/or mediate this relationship, such as partner satisfaction and partner drinking. Unlike previous research, the study also examines the association between problem drinking and female perpetration of violence. Some of the reasons proposed in the literature for the relationship between alcohol consumption and domestic violence are reviewed and the discussion indicates problem drinking is significantly associated with the perpetration of violence and victimisation, even after controlling for potential risk factors.en
